Monster Beverage Corporation, formerly Hansen Natural Corporation, incorporated on April 25, 1990,is a holding company. The Company develops, markets, sells and distributes alternative beverage. The alternative beverage category combines non-carbonated ready-to-drink iced teas, lemonades, juice cocktails, single-serve juices and fruit beverages, ready-to-drink dairy and coffee drinks, energy drinks, sports drinks, and single-serve still water (flavored, unflavored and enhanced) with new age beverages, including sodas that are considered natural, sparkling juices and flavored sparkling beverages. It has two reportable segments, namely Direct Store Delivery (DSD), whose principal products comprise energy drinks, and Warehouse (Warehouse), whose principal products comprise juice-based and soda beverages. The DSD segment develops, markets and sells products primarily through an exclusive distributor network, whereas the Warehouse segment develops, markets and sells products pr imarily directly to retailers. Corporate and unallocated amounts that do not relate to the DSD or Warehouse segments specifically, have been allocated to Corporate and Unallocated.
During the year ended December 31, 2012, it continued to expand its existing product lines and flavors and further develop its distribution markets. In particular, it continued to focus on developing and marketing beverages that fall within the category generally described as the alternative beverage category. By now we all know what Monster Beverage (MNST) gets from its tie-up with Coca-Cola (KO): A hefty chunk of change in exchange for nearly 17% of the company; Coca-Cola’s energy drink business swapped for its own soft-drink lines; and access to Coca-Cola’s international distributors. But what about Coca-Cola?

We view this development positively as it givesCoca-Cola exposure to one of the fastest growing segments of the global soft drink industryWhile category growth is clearly slowing in the U.S., the potential remains very strong internationally. Specifically, we see ex-U.S. market growth of more than +12% annually for energy drinks over the next five years, about double of what we project in the U.S. For Monster Beverage, overall growth has slowed in recent years, falling below double-digits in 2013, a far cry from hyper growth in the 2005-2007 period, as market share gains have tapered ! off. Inte! rnational sales have been a small, but growing, part of the Monster story, although the international mix stagnated last year. We expect the expanded distribution agreements resulting from this partnership to jump-startMonster Beverage growth in many countries around the world. Coca-Cola (KO) takes a 17% stake in Monster Beverage Corp (MNST), causing MNST shares to jump nearly 30%. This seems like a very smart strategic play by KO, conservatively entering into the energy drink market while limiting MNST expansion into the non-energy drink market. This helps KO develop a new revenue stream, testing the waters before diving completely in.
