    Fifth & Pacific Cos.(FNP) unveiled a plan to change its name to Kate Spade & Co., the second time the clothing maker has changed its moniker since 2012, with the latest move tied to its narrow focus on the designer brand. Shares dropped 8.2% to $29.25 premarket as the company also issued a fiscal-year sales outlook that missed Wall Street expectations.

    Recent cases
    Just last month, Fifth & Pacific (NYSE: FNP &n! bsp;) defended itself against infringement accusations regarding its Kate Spade Saturday brand. Another apparel maker, Saturdays Surf NYC, alleged that the Kate Spade spinoff would confuse customers and dilute its brand. The judge overseeing the case decided that the two brands were distinct enough for both to use the word "Saturday."

    Another up-and-coming competitor is Juicy Couture, a brand of Fifth and Pacific (NYSE: FNP  ) , which plans to launch a new line of intimate apparel early next year. For Fifth and Pacific, getting Juicy Couture to perform better would mark the final step in its overall turnaround, with the company's other two major brands having already seen gains in comps recently.
