Apollo Group Inc. (APOL) recently announced that the accreditation for its flagship university, University of Phoenix (UOP), was renewed. While the renewal cleared a major overhang for this private education service provider, it also pushed up Apollo share price slightly higher. The University accounts for more than 90% of Apollo revenues.

In February this year, the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) peer review team recommended that UOP be put on probationary status as it had concerns regarding the latter administrative and governance structure. However, later in May, an HLC advisory panel, acting on the review team report, recommended that UOP accreditation be renewed and the University be placed on notice status for two years. The advisory panel recommendation was based on the evidence of governance changes and new information submitted by UOP.

Going with the advisory panel recommendation, on Jul 9, HLC re-affirmed UOP accreditation through the 2022-2023 academic year and also placed the University on notice status for a two-year period. The UOP will now have to submit a Notice Report by fall 2014, providing evidence that it meets all standards for accreditation. By most accounts, it's an all-American dream come true. U.S. Geothermal Inc. (NYSEMKT:HTM), working hard - for years - to make something out of nothing can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel. HTM has swung to a profit, and is strong enough now that it's probably going to remain in the black in perpetuity. Shareholders who got into U.S. Geothermal anytime during or after 2012 have finally been handsomely rewarded, with most of that reward materializing in just the past three weeks. Regardless of when an investor got into a position in HTM though, there's just one thing left to do at this point.... get out. Lock in your gain and walk away, at least for a little while.

Getty Images Depending on your personal investing philosophy, risk profile, strategy, and a host of external factors, there's a long list of traits you could put on your checklist for what makes a stock right for your portfolio. And then there are the exceptions -- companies that, for good reason, fall outside of the parameters you've set, but that you can't help thinking are a "good investment" But picking a good investment doesn't always have to be so complex. You can use simpler screen -- a checklist of just a few traits that are universally good markers of an appealing long-term holding. Here are three key traits that will key you in to a good investment, regardless of the company's sector, whether it's considered a growth or value stock, or even whether it's a market favorite or a pariah. 1. A brand that's synonymous with the product Technology companies largely rely on human capital for their ongoing competitiveness. Needless to say, people are highly unpredictable assets that can, and do, change quickly. So, products with an Apple logo will only stay popular so long as the mechanics and technology created by its people are cutting-edge. In other words, it's the talent that made Apple (AAPL) what it is today. And in order to remain great, Apple needs to retain its best people and be better than its competitors in acquiring the top minds in its industry. That's why, despite the company's incredible growth and ability to shape the future of multiple industries, Apple will never be as sound an investment as, say, Coca-Cola (KO). Sure, Coca-Cola has an amazing manufacturing and distribution system, along with a super-secret formula to make its signature soft drink. But its true beauty as a company, a brand, and an investment, is that it has taken the simplest of ingredients and through brilliant branding turned its core product into one of the biggest, most recognizable brand names in the world (actually, the third biggest, according to Interbrand's 2013

Advisors' Opinion:

General Electric (NYSE: GE  ) and Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT  ) , the biggest manufacturers of locomotives in the world, are all too eager to take part. For the Dow to make another run higher of nearly 7% to get to 16,000, it'll need support from the same stocks that led it higher today. Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT  ) soared 3.5%, the top gainer in the Dow, as investors applauded the prospects of stronger economic activity in the company's key U.S. market. Yet, even with today's gains, Caterpillar remains more than 10% below its recent highs, reflecting anxiety about the company's other key market: China. Fellow industrial component Alcoa (NYSE: AA  ) , which climbed almost 2% today, faces the same general issue, as sluggishness in the Chinese economy has contributed to weak aluminum prices industrywide that have held down profits.

  • [By Matt Thalman]

Within the Dow, 26 of 30 components moved higher today, with all the winners led by Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT  ) , which gained 2.56% during the session. The move was a little unexpected, as there was relatively no company-specific news today. Volume was slightly higher than normal, with 7.8 million shares trading hands, while the average is only 6.7 million. The stock is down more than 4% on the year as concerns about the mining and construction industries worldwide have weighted on investors' minds. But with shares trading at just 11.5 times past earnings and 10.7 times future expected results, and with a current dividend yield of 2.9%, the stock seems extremely cheap.

  • [By Vanina Egea]

To explore and produce, a great investment is required in tools, and one of the leading equipment suppliers is Schlumberger (SLB). A key to remaining on top of the industry is innovation, and of that the company has a whole load. Throughout 2014 alone, the firm has introduced a microseismic surface acquisition system, a new fracturing technique for unconventional reserves, launched a degradable alloy technology to improve well productivity, a multilayer bed boundary detection service for clastic and carbonate fields, and a rotary steerable system that increases directional control and drilling efficiency. These product introductions have been done during the first quarter of 2014, making a strong statement about the company research and development pipeline. Gurus, however, mostly dropped the stock during the end of 2013. Let us see whether you can take advantage of the dumping and take a large position with long-term prospects.

Halliburton has focused much of its attention on the booming U.S. market, giving it more exposure to domestic production than more globally focused rival Schlumberger (NYSE: SLB  ) . With domestic drilling activity having been fairly weak lately, Halliburton's U.S. concentration has raised concerns among investors, as land-based rig counts have fallen sharply. But with efficiency gains from multi-pad drilling and multi-stage hydraulic fracturing, bulls hope that rig counts don't accurately reflect actual production activity and therefore that Halliburton's earnings will hold up better than some expect.

Top Low Price Stocks To Own Right Now

The discount retailer is facing stiff competition from cheaper and cooler online players.

(Money Magazine) For years the Minneapolis-based discounter used a mix of low prices and playful style to make big-box bargain shopping cool. That allowed "Tarjay" to hold its own against the 800-pound gorilla, Wal-Mart.

Lately, though, the chain finds itself in a struggle. Target (TGT, Fortune 500) may have bitten off more than it can chew by following Wal-Mart (WMT, Fortune 500) into the slow-growing, low-margin grocery business. Meanwhile, competition from cheaper, cooler online players like Amazon.com (AMZN, Fortune 500) is heating up. Some investors, though, think the retailer's stock itself is now looking like a bargain.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in RWC as long as it's trending above some near-term support levels at $3.20 or its 50-day at $3.10 and then once it sustains a move or close above $3.74 with volume that hits near or above 74,659 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then RWC will set up to enter new 52-week-high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that breakout are $4.50 to $5.

Investment Manna in the Middle East

Print FriendlyIsrael has become a huge economic success story despite getting off to a rough start more than 60 years ago.

Surrounded by hostile neighbors, the country fought five wars in the first two decades of its existence. Then, after securing its position in the region, it battled hyperinflation with annual rates as high as 950 percent in the 1980s.

While the violence in Israel has subsided, the country is still no stranger to controversy and strife. American actress Scarlett Johansson was recently forced to step down as an Oxfam ambassador after accepting an endorsement deal from SodaStream International (NSDQ: SODA), an Israeli company whose manufacturing plant is in the West Bank, and occasional bombings and gun attacks are still a fact of life there.

There are still other problems. Bank of Israel Governor Karnit Flug has said the country must reduce spending by ILS12 billion and find another ILS8 billion in tax revenue to reach its 2015 budget deficit target of 2.5 percent of gross domestic product. The central bank's annual report also points out that a red hot housing market and a high poverty rate must be addressed.

Still, the country learned its economic lessons from its early history and has come to be hailed as a successful "start-up nation," fostering businesses such as SodaStream and a host of others, thanks to friendly regulations and strong fiscal and monetary policies.

Israel also began production of its offshore Tamar gas field, making its first delivery of natural gas just a few days ago. The field is expected to deliver about 985 million cubic feet of gas per day, or about 10 billion cubic meters annually. Development of the field added 1 percent to the country's economic growth last year and is expected to add 0.3 percent this year, a figure that should rise as more customers for the gas are secured.

Those efforts are already well underway amid a noticeable thaw i! n Israeli-Turkish relations over the past year or so, with the two countries considering the construction of a pipeline to move some of that gas to Turkey. Not only would that sort of deal boost the economies of both countries, it would also lay the foundations for friendlier relations going forward.

Thanks to the country’s proactive steps to address economic concerns and its commitment to business and development, Standard and Poor's (S&P) recently affirmed Israel's "A+" credit rating and has begun ranking the country as "high income." S&P also said that it expects the country's annual per capita income to rise from its current level of about $38,000 to $42,000 by 2017. Just five years ago the average income was just $28,000.

Unlike dicier situations in many foreign markets, Israeli-US relations have been close for decades now, helping to make it easy for US investors to access Israeli stocks. In fact, Israel-based companies are the third most listed on US exchanges behind China and Canada. In 2013, about half of all the Israeli companies listed in the US ended the year with gains of 30 percent or more and, after the flat first quarter, most of them are outperforming so far this year as well.

One of my favorites is Caesarstone Sdot-Yam (NSDQ: CSTE), which manufacturers premium quartz surfaces for countertops, bathrooms, tables or just about anywhere you'd want a quartz surface.

While the company was founded in 1987 it has only traded on the NASDAQ since 2012. Since then its share price has more than quadrupled, driven by earnings growth of more than 14 percent. Since 2009, the company’s annual revenue has grown from $162.6 million to $356.6 million last year.

About 35 percent of the company's total sales last year were in the US, where Caesarstone purchased one of its primary competitors and its distributor. A quarter of its sales were in Australia, 14 percent in Canada, 12 percent in Israel and 6 percent in Europe. The remainder ! falls int! o a broad "rest of world" category.

Caesarstone has benefited from a comprehensive marketing strategy that doesn't rely on a single sales channel; you'll find its ads in consumer magazines and on television, at tradeshows for builders, sales reps visiting architects and a host of in-store displays. It also benefits from having a widely acknowledged superior product protected by technical know-how that helps the company to outshine competitors.

Given the improving pace of economic growth in Israel and the spur it provides to both home and commercial construction, Caesarstone's sales growth should continue its upward trajectory for at least the next few years. The company is anticipating this future prosperity; it recently added a fifth Israeli manufacturing line in the second quarter of this year and plans a US plant sometime next year.

Caesarstone Sdot-Yam rates a buy up to 61.

2 Hot Stocks on Traders' Radars

BALTIMORE (Stockpickr) -- Put down the 10-K filings and the stock screeners. It's time to take a break from the traditional methods of generating investment ideas. Instead, let the crowd do it for you.

>>5 Stocks Poised for Breakouts

From hedge funds to individual investors, scores of market participants are turning to social media to figure out which stocks are worth watching. It's a concept that's known as "crowdsourcing," and it uses the masses to identify emerging trends in the market.

Crowdsourcing has long been a popular tool for the advertising industry, but it also makes a lot of sense as an investment tool. After all, the market is completely driven by the supply and demand, so it can be valuable to see what names are trending among the crowd.

While some fund managers are already trying to leverage social media resources like Twitter to find algorithmic trading opportunities, for most investors, crowdsourcing works best as a starting point for investors who want a starting point in their analysis. Today, we'll leverage the power of the crowd to take a look at some of the most active stocks on the market today.

>>5 Rocket Stocks Worth Buying Now

These "most active" names are the most heavily-traded names on the market -- and often, uber-active names have some sort of a technical or fundamental catalyst driving investors' attention on shares. And when there's a big catalyst, there's often a trading opportunity.

Without further ado, here's a look at today's stocks.

Delta Air Lines

Nearest Resistance: $39

Nearest Support: $32.50

Catalyst: Technical Setup

You don't have to be an expert technical analyst to figure out what's going on in shares of Delta Air Lines (DAL). A quick look at the chart will do. Delta is up on big volume this afternoon, the latest bounce in a price channel that's been corralling shares for the last six months and change. Delta is a "buy the dips stock," and March's dip is providing investor with another buying opportunity this week.

The 50-day moving average has been an excellent proxy for support all the way up; if you decide to buy Delta here, I'd recommend putting a protective stop on the other side of that 50-day line.

American Capital

Nearest Resistance: $16.25

Nearest Support: $14.24

Catalyst: Share Repurchase

Shares of mid-cap asset manager American Capital (ACAS) are rallying more than 11% in this afternoon's trading, following news that the firm had repurchased 8.9 million shares. Make no mistake, the repurchase was just the catalyst for a buying frenzy that was already on a hair trigger -- that buyback wasn't material enough to cause such a big move, but buyers were looking for any excuse to jump in here.

From a technical standpoint, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to join them just yet. ACAS has pushed its was up close to previous resistance at $16.25, a price level that's going to provide some resistance to this stock's upside in April. There's a lot of downside risk and not a whole lot of upside reward following today's big-volume move.

Why This Tech Stock Has More Upside

Finisar (FNSR) is a leading provider of optical subsystems and components for telecom and data communication applications. The stock has roughly doubled over the past year, fueled by a strong secular demand for optical equipment (driven by the build-out of high-speed LTE networks) coupled with a compelling market-share gain story. With the stock off slightly from its 52-week highs, it's worth taking a closer look at this market leader.

Compelling product and customer base Finisar appears to have one of the broadest product portfolios in the industry. While the firm does have a number of potent competitors, notably JDS Uniphase (JDSU) in the telecom space and Avago (AVGO) in the datacom space, it appears that no other company matches the breadth of Finisar's product offerings across both of these segments.

Source: Finisar.

Now, lest one think that Finisar's offerings are broad but not deep, the company has seen steady share growth over the past 10 years and -- according to a December 2013 Ovum market study -- is currently the market share leader, with 16% of the market. This puts it well ahead of Avago, which has 9.7% share and JDS-Uniphase, with 8.6% share.

Source: Finisar.

A secular growth market While a broad product portfolio and strong competitive position are certainly compelling, investors would be remiss to ignore the underlying secular trends -- a good house is worth a lot less in a bad neighborhood. However, so far the pretty aggressive build-out of next-generation telecom infrastructure, as well as just the absolute explosion of data necessitating the continued growth in the data-center (helping Finisar's datacom business) have been good to Finisar, as the revenue picture suggests.

Source: Finisar.

As a result of the compelling revenue picture, Finisar has seen rather tremendous leverage, with gross margins up 690 basis points year over year in the most recent quarter and operating margins roughly tripling over that same timeframe. This has driven rather substantial EPS growth and explains the doubling of the share price. However, while this picture looks rosy, there are some things worth considering.

What could go wrong? Watchers of Finisar's shares have probably noticed some pretty extreme volatility in the stock price. This is reflected in the stock's beta, which comes in at 2.06, implying that the shares are about twice as volatile as the rest of the market. This is probably due in no small part to the fact that the number of sales sold short (remember that selling a stock short means that an investor is betting on a price decline) is a fairly high percentage of the total shares outstanding (17%, to be more precise).

Furthermore, the number of shares shorted continues to rise and is at the highest level seen during the past year. What is likely fueling that short interest is a bet that Finisar's recent growth spurt is merely cyclical and once the big network build-out cycle is complete, revenues will fall off, leverage will go away, and the shares go from looking fairly cheap to downright expensive.

Some historical perspective and outlook To put this into perspective, Finisar reported $948.8 million in sales during fiscal 2011 and record non-GAAP net income of $138 million. In fiscal 2012, revenues inched up slightly, but gross margins declined to 31.9% from 34.8% in the prior year. On top of that, increased operating expenses in the face of an anemic revenue growth picture and lower gross margin drove a substantial loss of leverage.

The good news, though, is that the explosion in data traffic thanks to the rise of mobile devices (which has dramatically juiced up Internet traffic), Internet streaming (particularly as bandwidth improves and higher-resolution video can be streamed), and cloud services doesn't seem anywhere close to over. For example, much of the world still has to transition to 4G LTE from the fairly low 3G data-rates, and developed countries will transition to faster LTE-Advanced and beyond speeds. This secular trend is exceptionally powerful, and while nothing lasts forever, it should have a lot more legs than even the original Internet boom itself.

Source: Finisar.

Conclusion Finisar is the market leader and is gaining share in a rather compelling secular growth market. While the stock isn't all that far removed from its 52-week highs, this is definitely a stock worth putting on your watchlist. And, should a broad market correction create a buying opportunity in tech equities, Finisar is definitely an interesting way to play the continued explosion in worldwide data traffic.
